A sketch of Klostermølle’s history

MonksThe Benedictine monks probably founded Voer Monastery in the 12th Century.

The monastery foundations are hidden underground in the courtyard surrounded by the existing buildings. Pilot excavations have been carried out, but a more thorough examination of the monastery has yet to be carried out.The monastery owned several properties in the region up to the time of the Reformation in 1536 when the Crown expropriated the properties of the Catholic Church.

The monastery buildings were demolished and the material used for the extension of Skanderborg Castle in 1561.

After the monks had left, Klostermølle remained in use as a corn mill. The existing buildings are however of a later date.

The mill was bought by H. H. Holst in 1872. He expanded the business to include the production of paper pulp. On the initiative of Director Aa. Schouboe-Madsen the business was extended to the production of cardboard in 1933.

The production of cardboard continued under different owners up to 1974 when some of the manufacturing buildings burnt down and a general economic recession made continued production uneconomic.

In 1975 the Environment Ministry bought the buildings. They are now used partly as a memory of the industry that developed around the use of water-power and partly as a nature centre and school, with a place for canoeists to overnight.

The 90-metre long drying barn, built completely in wood, is a landmark for Klostermølle. At the north end of the barn there is a bird watching tower with a fantastic view of Mossø and Klosterkær.
